Southwest Ranches is a town located in Broward County, Florida, near Fort Lauderdale. The town was incorporated on June 6, 2000, and it spans an area of approximately 13 square miles (34 square kilometers). A group of local residents formed the Southwest Ranches Homeowners Association (SWRHA) in the early 1990s. The goal was to advocate for the incorporation of the area as a town. Their primary goal was to protect the community from unwanted development, maintain the equestrian lifestyle, and have more control over local governance.

After several years of discussions and negotiations with Broward County, Southwest Ranches successfully gained approval for incorporation. On June 6, 2000, the town of Southwest Ranches was officially established. It became the 30th municipality in Broward County.
