In 2022, Art Basel celebrates its 20th anniversary. Does that seem like a long time to you? Well, then you’d be shocked to learn that the history of the event dates back to almost 50 years now. However, it was only after the event came to Miami that it gained the popularity it has now. 

Origins of Art Basel

Gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Balz Hilt, and Trudl Bruckner launched an international art fair back in the 1970s. The idea was simple: to expand art beyond the confinements of the lines drawn on the map. The art fair was held across 90 galleries in around 10 countries, with over 30 publishers being featured. More than 16,000 people showed up to the inaugural event, making it much more successful than expected. 

Overall the following three decades, the event saw a lot of changes, with publishers and artists experimenting with themes and platforms. The ultimate goal was to make it more attractive to the masses. 

And for the most part, they were pretty successful, as almost all Art Basel events held since the 1970s have experienced positive public reaction. 

Why Art Basel 2022 is Important? 

Over the years, Art Basel, Miami, has evolved into what is not considered to be one of the most important art events in the world. 

However, in addition to celebrating its 20th anniversary in Miami, Art Basel 2022 is important for another reason. Due to the pandemic, the event was entirely canceled in 2020. In 2021, the event had to be postponed until the winter, and not everyone was prepared for it. 

However, in 2022, the event takes place on schedule, returning to its full glory. So don’t miss out!
