Art Basel: Past, Present, Future

Art Basel Beginnings

The Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner, and Balz Hilt created the Art Basel in the 1970s. They gathered approximately 16,000 visitors with their showcase of international art. Instantaneously, Art Basel had an explosive response as it emerged in the art world.

Through History

In the 80’s the gallery held a focus on photography. It later became the world’s leading platform to display photography. As it continued on in the 90’s, they focused primarily on films by and about artists.

Then in the 2000’s, the gallery debuts in Miami. In addition to their unique platform for visual art, panelists were included. The panelists discussed diversity in collecting and exhibiting art. The panelists included famed collectors, museum directors, and more.

Soon Art Basel established itself in Hong Kong. The inaugural gallery garnered a crowd of over 60,000 patrons. In 2015, they collaborated with BMW to initiate the BMW Art Journey. The BMW Art Journey promotes the recognition and support of up and coming artists.

Today and Forward

a driving force in supporting the role galleries play in nurturing the careers of artists

It is clear that Art Basel is concerned in preserving art through the appreciation of, not only the products, but the real people who make the art as well. Initiatives such as the BMW Art Journey help support artists to continue their work and craft a dialogue that can only be expressed through art.

Their show at Miami Beach will hold a diverse set of art and artists. Therefore, art from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa will be featured. With a combination of modern and contemporary art, Art Basel promises a “new generation of emerging stars“!
